The Provincial Places To Grow Act has set growth guidelines which call for 40% (Intensification) of all new growth to be located in existing urban areas. So, why is the Town considering 60% intensification and some Councillors pushing for 100%? The Town of Markham is considering a growth plan that will drastically change our community as we know it today. The plan wants to concentrate 60% of all new growth into existing neighbourhoods principally in high rise buildings. Some Councillors want up to 100% intensification, which would put all new growth in existing neighbourhoods and in high rise apartment buildings. The Provincial Places To Grow Act requires Markham to accept 151,000 new residents moving to Markham. Without expanding Markham’s urban area all these people would have to be housed in apartment buildings. This would require between 300 and 600 buildings, depending on height, creating an Apartment Belt in our community. We can all imagine what this level of intensification could mean: road congestion, overcrowding in schools and recreational facilities, changes in property values, the loss of our community form and architectural heritage. Together, let’s focus on Responsible Growth. Let’s concentrate on a realistic model of our community, with room to grow and generous acres of protected lands to enjoy.
